4-cylinder reciprocating "Compound" steam engine, with an output power of 2,750 HP at 185 rpm. Manufacturer: Canadian Vickers Montreal, 1943, based on a British design of 1920's. One of the two engines of the Canadian Navy frigate "STORMONT" (GRT 1602) which served during the World War II. The frigate was bought by the Greek shipowner Aristoteles Onassis and converted at HDW-Kiel Shipyard in 1953 to the luxurious yacht "CHRISTINA". After the death of Onassis, his daughter donated "CHRISTINA" to the Greek state in 1978. The yacht was retrofitted with diesel engines in 1997. One of the steam engines was restored and erected at the Laboratory of Marine Engineering, NTUA in 2000 through a donation of the A. S. Onassis Foundation. (View article in Greek [pdf]) |
