Engine Testing Facility
The Laboratory of Marine Engineering is equipped with a state-of-the-art engine testing facility (view facility poster) allowing for the experimental investigation of marine propulsion plants under transient loadings. The main test cell, covering an area of 136 sq. meters, is housed in a soundproof enclosure, which has also been especially designed so as to minimise the vibrational loading of the building. The main test cell also includes the Hybrid Integrated Propulsion POwertrain HIPPO-1 and HIPPO-2 test-beds. The test cell floor is covered with modular gratings while its roof consists of detachable covers which can be easily removed using a travelling gantry crane. The gantry crane can be used to install or remove engines and equipment. Ventilation and temperature control of the test cell is achieved by employing two centrifugal fans, capable of maintaining an air through flow of 25,000 m3/hr. The test cell is also equipped with a modern fire fighting system. The test cell is located in the basement of the Laboratory.
The control room, located one level above and overlooking the test cell, houses the monitoring, alarm and control systems for the facility. A state-of-the-art fuel separation and conditioning facility is located ajdacent to the fuel tank room. Also, an experimental exhaust gas particulate matter (smoke) filtering facility is installed at the exhaust gas pipeline, which is used for emissions control systems development.
